FAQs

What is the highest class of heavy vehicle licence I can get from a regular car licence?

A regular car licence is a class C licence. After you have held this licence for one year the highest class of heavy vehicle licence you are eligible for is a HR licence.

How long will it take me to get my heavy vehicle licence?

You can get your heavy vehicle licence with us in one day providing you are a competent driver. The minimum driving hours range from 5-6 for the different classes and gearboxes and your assessment will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

What do I need to have with me on the day?

You must have your current drivers licence and log book with you at all times while driving a heavy vehicle. You are also required to wear closed in shoes and high visibility work wear (we can provide a high visibility vest).

What are the conditions I may end up with on my licence?

The conditions relate to the type of truck gearbox you completed your assessment in, it will be called a condition B. To have the condition B removed from your licence you will be required to complete another assessment driving a truck of that type.A condition B on your licence means you are only licenced to drive an automatic or synchromesh truck.

I do not understand the different truck gearboxes.

The possibilities include an automatic truck, a synchromesh gearbox which is similar to a manual car and a road ranger or crash box gearbox which has multiple gears.

How can I prepare for my Driver knowledge test?

The driver knowledge test works the same way it did when you went for you learners licence for a car. There is a practice test located on the RMS website and also a ‘bank of questions’ you can review to help you prepare for the test. A link to both of these can be found in the resources section of our website.
